C++ is definitely not a terrible language. It was one of the first OO programming mostly widely adopted (though today there are far better ways of doing OO with other programming languages). The problem with higher level languages is their performance. C++ sits somewhere between C and languages like Java, Python. I would say its probably a good place to program games which are both memory and CPU intensive.
