I would have been #3 at a very successful tech company had I chosen it over grad school and that's about half what #1 and #2 are worth these days. That said, over a decade after I tripled my salary in a day by fleeting my post-doc for the dotcom boom, everything I learned in academia suddenly became relevant and continues to increase in relevance every year.
