The experienced length of your prison sentence would depend on the gravity in the cell where you were kept. After 10 years in that cell a 1,000 years may have passed on earth. Might be a good situation for both the victim (now long dead) and the criminal (start a new life).
- Yhippa 12y agoHow weird would that be in practice? The punishment would not only be time lost but also coming back to a society that's drastically different. You'd be pretty much alone in a new world like an Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer situation. How interesting would it be if laws on Earth changed during your stay. If your prison sentence got reduced on Earth you might only be in there for a few minutes. Interesting stuff to think about for sure.

You'd be pretty much alone in a new world like an Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer situation. "Modern society can neither use you as-is nor reform you into a productive member. We hope, in the fullness of time, the future society which ours has developed into will find you a more tractable case." It would certainly dissuade people from re-offending with the same skills, at least in a technical and, possibly, social context.
- MildlySerious 12y agoI don't know, dumping a criminal like a murderer or rapist into a strange society that he will likely never be able to call "home" sounds like the perfect condition to cause him to keep going.
- auntienomen 12y agoTo the person imprisoned, this would feel like you had killed everyone they ever met.
- rl3 12y agoAlthough that aspect is utterly brutal, another way of looking at it would be a free ticket on a time machine into the future. If that sort of arrangement existed today, I think you'd see many people lining up for Space Supermax.
