Stupid post. What is a personal computer? It definitely is NOT a kit. Kit requires an engineer, not an ordinary person. Same with scientific calculators, all forms of boxes with switches and lamps, not to mention devices that cost more than a house.
Personal computer is a home appliance, something ordinary person can buy in a corner shop and use by himself. Look at that list again and what do you get? Apple I. Wozniak is Henry Ford of computer industry.
- jacquesm 12y agoThose kits were bought by non-engineers simply because they wanted a computer of any kind, and were willing to learn the skills to assemble them if they did not already have those. The 'barrier to entry' to learn how to program in those days was quite a bit higher than it is today. What is a PC is an arbitrary thing, the writer of this article sees the Personal Computer as a computer intended for use by a single person rather than a whole department or company. It being a kit or not isn't all that important. Even the Apple I, which you seem to prefer came without a case, keyboard, transformer and display.
