For similar reasons I have 5 years old HP Elitebook 2540P. It has 8 GB memory, two ssds, lasts 9 hours on battery, dual CPU goes up to 2.6 GHz... It costs $250 to replace it. I can leave it in hotel without ssd. And it can take rough handling, moist exposure etc... I found that newer laptops do not offer anything new. You shave off one 1 pound, but loose most extendability options. I might update once some 13" laptop offers 24GB RAM.
