I think it's an accent thing. When I say WWW at normal speed, it sounds more like dubble-u dubble-u dubble-u. American, east coast USA.

    I'm not arguing that it's nine syllables, just saying that it's most likely an accent / speed of speech thing as far as the author's six-vs-four thing goes.

Most people I know pronounce it dub-dub-dub so I started doing that as well. Maybe a London thing?
