I don't know if it was intentional, but most of the intro literature around Scala seems to avoid terms like monad, just introducing the reader to Option, Future, etc., and letting the reader notice the common patterns (map, flatMap). Eventually, the reader learns about monads without ever explicitly learning about monads.
