Most patents seems to be the logical conclusion of trying to solve some problem. Anyone else who has the same problem will reach a similar solution. It is "simply" a matter of doing the engineering. A patent would forbid anyone else from even trying. The Google infrastructure would be a good example. Amazon and Facebook have built similar facilities.
