The cost to run utilities to a property varies considerably with location. Typically it depends on the distance of your property from existing electrical lines. If you purchase land way off grid it can cost > $100K to get an electrical connection. So you need to do some research before buying any land. At some point it is cheaper to generate your own electricity. If you generate your own electricity then you need to research what form of energy is most plentiful for your region (solar, wind, hydro, or a gas / diesel generator). You might consider getting a property with decent hydroelectric "head" (water flowing with a significant elevation drop) as microhydro power tends to be more reliable than solar or wind.
