- malandrew 12y agoAfter reading this Laurie Penny piece, it's worth checking out comment #86 on Scott Aaronson's follow up blog post which discusses ableism and intersectionality, since it's quite insightful: http://www.scottaaronson.com/blog/?p=2119#comment-360595 http://www.scottaaronson.com/blog/?p=2119#comment-360595 After you read that comment, this poignant response to the Scott Aaronson issue is worth checking out: http://theunitofcaring.tumblr.com/post/106549627991/that-scott-aaronson-thing http://theunitofcaring.tumblr.com/post/106549627991/that-sco... Lastly, this article my girlfriend sent to me today is also worth checking out: http://goodmenproject.com/sex-relationships/why-do-we-demonize-men-who-are-honest-about-their-sexual-needs/ http://goodmenproject.com/sex-relationships/why-do-we-demoni... Anyways, my own personal take on most of these types of debates, is that subgroups in both the feminism and the mra/redpill movement have completely jumped the shark, because this: http://www.smbc-comics.com/index.php?db=comics&id=2939 http://www.smbc-comics.com/index.php?db=comics&id=2939 The messages from fundamentalists in both the MRA and feminist movements have resulted in gross over-simplifications that make it impossible to have rational discussions. Trolls from both sides completely overpower the discussion until everybody is talking past each other. The moment you see anyone throw out terms and phrases like like "mansplaining", "femsplaining", "feminazi", "victim-blaming", "rape culture", "fedora-wearing", "the patriarchy", "the matriarchy", "red-pill", "victim silencing", etc, you should just check out of the conversation as fast as possible. These days, the only -isms I personally can get behind is humanism or equalism, since any -ism that purely due to its semiotics/etymology implies connotations of an in-group versus and outgroup (i.e. "us v. them") will invariably end up generating the scenario depicted in that SBMC cartoon. Until the rationalists on both sides (MRAism and feminism) abandon their -ism in favor of a universally inclusive -ism term like humanism or equalism, relations between the sexes are likely to keep getting worse (furthermore, a focus on -isms that are rooted in the assumption of a gender binary only serves to alienate and exclude those that identify as queer like the author of theunitofcaring blog post above)
