I used to have one of these, and I completely agree with the article. The DRM is shitty, the solution is expensive, and my house would periodically smell like baking cat feces. Eventually unit started to do the turd bakery routine more and more often (a worse failure mode is hardly even imaginable). So I replaced it with a Litter Robot[1]. With the exception of having to buy regular cat litter, which isn't a big deal, it's better in every way. It runs in a couple of minutes instead of like 40 minutes. It's quieter.
