Yes them constantly standing near you would be a bit awkward. I would probably find it hard not to strike up a conversation with them if their there. I know it's the Japanese way but i just prefer to be friendly with the staff. That's part of the reason i want to go to Japan such a large cultural disconnect; wonder how i would react to situation like this.
