I attempted to start a mobile software company(Symbian, well before the iPhone). The biggest mistake: attempting to start the thing without adequate funding. We attempted to bootstrap, and despite the fact that we built a great application we simply didn't have the money to drive traffic and build the exposure we needed. We had quite a bit of critical success, but that just didn't translate to sales. I'm a strong believer in proper capitilization of your start-up (not a popular opinion on this board).
