Anecdata: at my current gig, I almost never run into any memory-related issues with the C++ services that I support, and I've never written a "delete" because everything is managed with smart pointers. The one time we ran out-of-memory wasn't because of a leak. On the other hand, one of the most frequent problems with our Java services is "GC thrashing".
