Unions aren't the panacea you think they are. My experience with unions has been that they cater to the lowest common denominator. My salary increases were built into the union contract as was my "work out of class". I could only get a 5% pay differential when I did a work out of class, rather than having the ability to negotiate that on my own. Then when I became a manager and was no longer a union member, the union attacked my management position so hard, that I rage quit because I simply couldn't take it any longer.
