Should we read this page as suggesting a prerequisite to learning category theory is being able to interpret LaTeX math mode on the fly? Or did a bit of javascript magic not load for me?

Something is wrong on your end, but it's not Javascript. It looks fine to me both with and without JS.

    Actually, they're not images. They're MathML markup. http://www.w3.org/Math/ http://www.w3.org/Math/
