Conservative VCs that feel comfortable investing in the "sure thing" or defensible/patented tech (it's their money, so they are free not to invest it :-)) and mostly conservative companies (noncompete agreements are just one of the indicators). Kendall Square is ok if you are a young kid (in school or just out of school). The Microsoft NERD Center IS a good place to host tech events/meetups.
