I'm not going to argue that rand() isn't misused by programmers who don't know any better, but at the same time you have legions of coders who understand rand() very well and those expectations will be totally broken here. I wouldn't have even bothered to check the the man pages for rand before assuming it was deterministic for a given seed to srand().
