It seems like there was a short period of time when Uber & Lyft cars in NYC were just anyone with a car and the app but over the last few months that seems to have ended. I can't remember the last time I wasn't in a very nice, newish car using either app. My guess is the less nice cars got churned out by rider ratings. That said I still try to use anything but Uber to get a ride.
