Interesting way to look at it ... kinda like how one could conflate the invention of SMTP & the problem of spam email? If one judges new things through the lens of mainstream media and not by actually seeking to understand the new thing then of course it'll seem like a "never-ending hype-machine". Seems to me you might actually be gaining an understanding of how the media works and confusing that with an understanding with the topic they're talking about.
