This seems to make the R2D2 Starwars Leia hologram message viable? http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xIFJLMyUwrg http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xIFJLMyUwrg With this kind of technology built into Playstation 7 you'll be able to play FIFA 2025 in a big living room with all your friends, with an entire mini football pitch projected in the middle of everyone (in 4D?). Awesome. I've been imagining this for years!

No. Contrary to what the images want you to believe, these are invisible shapes, detectable only by touch.

It does however say "Visually, the researchers have demonstrated the ultrasound patterns by directing the device at a thin layer of oil so that the depressions in the surface can be seen as spots when lit by a lamp." Although I assume that's not the normal mode of operation.

Well no. If so, you'd have to stick your hand in the oil. Useless.

"Haptic" means touch, not light. ("Sound" is another hint.)

  Gutted :(

Dont worry, just combine this with other technologies to make a separate visual and you are good.

While the submission link technology doesn't allow for this, it's being worked on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNoOiXkXmYQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNoOiXkXmYQ Still sort of rudimentary, but the foundation is there.
