I've read various drafts of this book and it really is fantastic. Rather than just teaching limited domain knowledge in science and engineering, it teaches a way to tackle ill-specified problems and how to wrestle out answers to hard questions.
For the more mathematically inclined there's also a similar previous book by the same author, also available for free as a pdf:

- aethertap 12y agoI can give a strong second to the Street Fighting Mathematics recommendation. The stuff in there makes math into a thinking tool in a way I haven't seen anywhere else.
- scott_s 12y agoInteresting. I think that Randal Munroe's "What If" posts (http://what-if.xkcd.com/ http://what-if.xkcd.com/) and book (http://whatif.xkcd.com/book/ http://whatif.xkcd.com/book/) encourage much the same thing by example.
- kaybe 12y agoSo I was wondering what else can be downloaded for free - I found this list here: https://ebooks-it.org/mit-press-1.htm https://ebooks-it.org/mit-press-1.htm Sadly it doesn't like back to the mitpress page and gives the files directly, but hey.
