Ask HN: How long will app income last?
A friend and I had worked on a game which recently took off for us in the Android store, giving us more than $25k monthly in ad revenue on a consistent basis for more than 5 months consecutively.
This is immensely surprising and rewarding for us, of course, but we're uncertain how this income will vary over time.
Does anyone on HN have past experience with mobile game success via ad revenue? How long did the income sustain itself before the game's popularity faded?
- DonCarlitos 12y agoFrom my experience, there is a period of about a year from launch (depending, of course, on marketing budget) where sales are pretty consistent - taking into account expected seasonal variations. After that, sales start dipping pretty dramatically - in the absence of meaningful updates/revs. At that point, an increase in marketing/social media dollars can prop-up sales for a spell, but not for long without revs. If one builds-in localization from the beginning and launches with multiple language versions it can ease the pain considerably. And, of course, taking the game to new markets like iOS, STEAM and PC will add new revenue streams.
- zerr 12y agoWhy don't you put some IAP? Slight-off topic: could you please quickly summarize how did you go with ads? AFAIK you have to buy ads and show them later, right? And in fact, there is a chance that you loose on ads? How do you choose ads (topics)? Thanks!
