I'm actually trying to plan out some experiments towards building something towards this sort of vision, and it seems that I may soon be in a fortunate situation where I'll be able to do production large scale experiments towards this very vision, and perhaps be able to open source pieces over time. Point being, you're articulating a need thats definitely there.
