The MySQL client/server protocol is extremely simple: http://forge.mysql.com/wiki/MySQL_Internals_ClientServer_Protocol http://forge.mysql.com/wiki/MySQL_Internals_ClientServer_Pro... I'd be surprised if there were any performance loss compared to the amount of time required to marshal Python data for calls via the C library.
