I am surprised there is no mention of the BSD fetch(1) http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=fetch%281%29 http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=fetch%281%29 , which probably pre-dates both curl and wget.
