The sad part is that a lot of people (especially local) who are at least mildly respected in software development or infosec give me crap for being a PHP dev.

The sad part is that a lot of people (especially local) who are at least mildly respected in software development or infosec give me crap for being a PHP dev. None of the people I've ever talked to who are far in their field (Zooko Wilcox-O'Hearn, Thomas Ptacek, Anthony Ferrara, Dan Kaminsky, Matthew Green, etc.) ever gave me flak for PHP though. :)
