It's important because a few months in prison (less than a year according to the article) is ridiculous compared to most prison sentences. Of course, that doesn't mean that even a few weeks in prison isn't atrocious. But a lot of people have been through much more, sometimes when they weren't even guilty, and didn't have a voice to be heard.
