Is there something like ID3 tags for pictures?
- th0ma5 12y agoYes, EXIF metadata.
- clarkm 12y agoI totally forgot about that. Though I thought EXIF just had technical info like resolution, camera mode, date, and location. Is it really as flexible as ID3? I know next to nothing about photography, so maybe there tons of tools out there to manage your photo library EXIF tags that I have never noticed.
- Brian-Puccio 12y agoBeyond EXIF, there's also IPTC, which the afore-mentioned Lightroom is pretty good at managing. Couple that with built in geo-tagging of photos thanks to cameras with built in GPS (or do it after the fact with a GPS logger) and you can have a pretty decent system. Both the geographic feature and the keyword feature allow for hierarchies, not just strictly free tagging.
- stevekemp 12y agoTo be honest I've found interoperability to be a pain though. So what I do is store a ".meta" file in the directory of each set of photos. That contains "location=" and "tags=foo, bar". Then I have a wee shell script to search. If I need to I can have ".meta.IMG_FOO.CR3" to store per-picture data. But generally I order by date + location anyway, so having one file in a directory works out well.
- sib 12y agoIf you'd like to learn more than you thought possible about EXIF, IPTC, and other metadata for photos, check out Phil Harvey's excellent ExifTool program and libraries. It lets you read, write, and edit metadata from image files created by hundreds of different devices. http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/ http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/
