Ask HN: Your experience with Wealthfront
Would love to hear what experiences and thoughts the HN community has around Wealthfront.
Overall, I've had quite a positive experience with Wealthfront.
My one complaint/wish is:
- Quicker funding
According to their website, funding takes between 2-3 days. My personal experience is more or less in line with this, with a couple occasions where my money was invested 4 days after initiating a funding.
This is obviously a big deal when you're trying to take advantage of particular movements in the market. While it is very difficult to time the market (overall), there are opportunities to gain a couple % points of returns by investing after particularly steep sell offs.
Oct 2014 is a great example where I personally lost a significant amount of money due to rebalancing and funding taking longer than expected -- had my "trades" been fulfilled in 1 or 2 days vs. 3-4 days I would have minimized my losses from the Oct 9-15 sell off AND been able to get an extra points from the recovery the week after.
Of course, Wealthfront isn't a "trading" platform and I typically touch it only a few times/year, but Wealthfront CEO Adam Nash agrees. We had a brief Twitter convo -- his response: "I would like to see funding be immediate. Working on it." Props.
(I'd also love to see an option for hedging considering you're long on the whole portfolio. A small VIX trade that resets after a 50% gain would be nice)
