Look at Musk almost go bankrupt twice between SpaceX and Tesla. Solving real problems requires spectacular amounts of capital, however with $1500 in gear you can make cat sharing apps, which beats stacking boxes. (My previous career). Solving an important problem is generally dismissed as a science project. Just look at the ratings difference between CSPAN and TMZ, that's all you really need to know about what society wants.
