I may be racist or something, but I don't trust software written outside of US, Europe and Australia. I know Samsung now has labs around the world, but the important decisions are still made in Seoul. In my humble experience those guys are never agile, never able to say "i was wrong", etc. That attitude works well for devices, based on other's designs (ARM, Google) but leads to really bad, insecure software.
- Spearchucker 12y agoAgile is not good for security, which requires up-front design if you're going to get it right. TDD isn't good enough for security testing, and doing thorough security testing at the end of each sprint that changed security-enforcing code is neither practical nor cheap.
- angry_octet 12y agoAgile is totally orthogonal to security. Its more about tailoring the work done to what is actually needed and effective teamwork. In no sense does agile dispense with up front design. Similarly TDD still has to start with a specification. Designing tests on the requirements frequently cause them to be tightened significantly. If you mean 'TDD tests will never protect you from random chaos monkey coders' you are right, but it never claimed to.
- Spearchucker 12y agoYou're absolutely right. The great unwashed doesn't view agile that way though.
- angry_octet 12y agoSad but true.

- decktech 12y agoYou trust software written in the US, Europe and Australia? Do we read the same HackerNews?
- angry_octet 12y agoI can confirm a similar cultural/organisational resistance to admitting you FUBARed something. I'm not sure our spies are any more competent than Russia/China/Korea/India/etc. Actually recent revelations seem to imply a certain sense of unreality, an overconfident, bureaucratic, overtly political and un-scientific juggernaut.
- damian2000 12y agoHave you got a car made in Asia somewhere? Chances are you have, and rely on it everyday ... there's hundreds of thousands of lines of code running on it.
- jp 12y agoHaving read actual Samsung code I would guess it was written in India by someone who uses copy/paste instead of a small library. I understand that runtime dependencies are a problem in embedded programming, but the Bada platform suffers because it was written by lots of people who were all not talking to each other.
