What an interesting post. It's the lack of civility in this episode, it's the warmongering, the violence which is so distasteful. Here's a thought experiment for us: Ever heard of a non violent online activist? (abuse / psychological harm = violence when online, I'd wager) What would such a person look like? It's roots lies in human and group psychology - but for the vast majority of people even knowing this does not help them escape it and see it objectively. The core part of this group psychology is the identity of the group "if you are not with us, you are against us". The identity of the group is formed by those inside pointing at what is outside, and by what those outside point to as that group. This is classically seen in an extreme group - a cult.
