My take on it has always been, for money not to be a big factor in life, you need a certain amount of money. Otherwise you're constantly counting it, tracking prices, looking for income, etc. To be able to make enough money to not have to be thinking about it all the time, but to forego the opportunity on idealistic grounds seems to be a painful shot at my foot; I will have made myself constantly worry about money out of my disdain for it.
