I'm a software engineer. My degree was half pure engineering subjects (math, physics, signal theory, the works) and half computer science. While not all programming is engineering, whenever you are modeling complex systems, it is engineering as pure as it comes (in the sense of applied physics and applied math). It is also (always?) storytelling, I agree.
