I think a lot of these tool chains, or fragments thereof, are going to be open sourced eventually, but all engineering (open or not) is being paid for by someone (at least indirectly). So a lot of these tools are only going to be make that move once the authors can "pay" for the time to do so. ('cause life is more than just software i'm told!)
