GamerGate is very probably a hate group, with no other legitimate purpose. they're known to send people into forums like this to argue politely and coherently that the "movement" is 100% legitimate. typically the person who comes onto a site like this, to argue in that manner, also makes virtiolic sexist and racist claims elsewhere, typically 8chan (previously 4chan - yes, these people are so fucked up that even 4chan banned them).
the specifics of the GamerGate swindle are very, very interesting for understanding how social media works, and can be misused.

TLDR: Rick Falkvinge's book SwarmWise, plus a great deal of sophisticated and very malicious social engineering.
- Rubix117 12y agoYep, because the SJW feminists don't hate men...
- le_hackour 12y agoGamerGate is not a group, Anita. It's an event where multiple industry respected journalists were caught censoring or promoting certain stories in exchange for sexual favors.
- sb057 12y agoI think it should be noted that the article you linked to is published by Gawker Media, one of the companies at the center of this.
- ijk 12y agoWould you prefer the New York Times?[1] Or maybe The Washington Post?[2] And let's not pretend that anyone has any evidence of actual problems at Gawker, only disproven accusations. - sb057 12y agoConsidering that those sites both have much more objective coverage, yes. That being said, there is considerable evidence of corruption at Gawker. http://www.historyofgamergate.com/kotaku-in-action.html http://www.historyofgamergate.com/kotaku-in-action.html
- ijk 12y agoThere's no corruption on the part of Kotaku described at that link. None. It's also excellent evidence that this is all about harassing Zoe Quinn and has nothing to do with ethics or journalism.
- applewut 12y agoNo corruption at all, none, not for years: http://www.tiki-toki.com/timeline/entry/343871/Corruption-consumer-hate-and-bad-journalism-in-games-journalism/ http://www.tiki-toki.com/timeline/entry/343871/Corruption-co...

- doe 12y agoGamerGate is about transparency in game's journalism, educate yourself.
- Sugar_Free 12y agoYou're linking to an article posted by Jezebel, owned by Gawker. No one takes them seriously at all. No one should take them seriously because in one minute they're proclaiming rape is bad, the next that it's good against men. So screw off with that nonsense propaganda. You're not here to inform people, you're here to brush all [irrelevant group] as trolls/haters/terrorists, or whatever Jezebel told you to think. I dislike gamers as much as the next, but you're the very person Rick is talking about. Not gamers.
- Chrnoschwinn 12y agoGameGate people were not banned on 4chan. This is you spreading misinfo. The subject was banned because of the spam apparently. But this too is called onto question due to the lack of response from the staff besides a few posts. The users were not banned unless they broke a rule. Many still go there. As for the snippet about GG being a hate group. It is obviously a consumer revolt with no leaders of any kind. A group that is tired of gaming journalism's nonsense, "indie" games, and gender politics being shoved into games by people who don't even play them. If you are going to judge to be so shallow to judge on an entire group of people based on an individual's actions or action. I don't know what to tell you.
- Fear-The-N8V 12y agoMr./Ms. Wu, There is nothing sexist or racist about wanting transparency in games "journalism". Insinuating that trolls only exists in one side of this argument is also preposterous. No one wants to be lied to for money.
- ben0x539 12y agoThis comment is totally on point and I'm immensely enjoying the frustrated reactions in the replies to it.
- ben246810 12y agoYes clearly we hide in our rape caves and scheme in our Legion of Doom headquarters about which female dev to harass next. Let's repeatedly ignore the countless people of every race, gender and creed who are sick of game journalists and instead focus on the bad apples within the group that GG has repeatedly reported and denounced because "they're all the same people." Then in the same breath claim you aren't responsible for the bad apples in your group who have done crap like send rape and death threats to Boogie's wife, doxx people and get people fired like one of the members of #notyourshield who was a genuine minority sick of having his racial background being used as ammo against gamers for somehow not being inclusive which is completely false. Oh and FYI, people left 4chan and moved to 8chan because the talk was being censored just like everywhere else, they weren't banned.
