The people developing command line tools become proficient quickly, writing and improving on existing CLI apps. If they were to spend time writing GUIs, we wouldn't have all these wonderful CLI apps to begin with. If enough people are complaining about a CLI app, then maybe there is a niche for a company to explore and write a GUI no? Until then, the students need to invest some of their time (rather than money) to use a (usually) open source software.
