That's totally fair enough, but I don't believe that down-voting should be done on opinion - as it can bury a point of view. Very happy with people disagree-ing

That's totally fair enough, but I don't believe that down-voting should be done on opinion - as it can bury a point of view.
Very happy with people disagree-ing with me that's their prerogative of course! But down-voting someone is like flagging them. You should upvote something because you think it's a good comment. But never downvote unless the comment is abusive, flamebait etc. anyway IMHO :-)
- uaygsfdbzf 12y agoYou're free to use votes as you please, but down-voting is not at all flagging for abuse, and there's no reason people should have to treat it as such. This has come up a few times in the past, but https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=117171 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=117171 shows that downvotes are clearly not just a flagging mechanism for abusive content.
