that's what it feels like is going on in the japanese example, and I have trouble believing donatello's angel isn't supposed to look that off-balance and dynamic. also the french figure looks like he's doing something weird with a stick, and only the center, standing figure on the new yorker cover is "homolateral", which I think adds to the intended effect. one could say it appears that "Rose Eveleth" enjoys writing more than critical research.
