Ask HN: Canadian developer looking for the American dream
I've had it with Vancouver. I've lived here all my life. It is home but now I feel like there's nothing really left to justify working just enough for a roof over my head. The job market here for tech job is horrible, underpaid, long working hours, developers competing to see who can work the longest for the least amount of money. Housing affordability is a big issue here because of real estate speculation from overseas, and the salary has not changed since the 1980.
I'm set on to find the American dream. Higher salary, bigger malls, bigger portions, better women. I'm sick of the classic Vancouver propaganda, "suck it up because you are living in the most beautiful city in the wor-", I'd like to punch the person who says it.
And a testament of the American dream, there's literally no one who went to work in the States end up coming back here. It's like once they go south, they don't come back. Many of my friends have disappeared into jobs in America or talk about how much they miss Vancouver.
I want to know how I can get started to make my American dream come true, because I'm fed up with having to work long and hard for a salary that barely keeps one afloat. I'm fed up with employers who give you a hard time for wanting to take a vacation. I'm tired of co-workers who will compete on the amount of overtime as badge of honor.
