It united the Cuban people in their lack of access to goods on the International market, and helped create an egalitarianism that otherwise doesn't exist if people have access to international trade markets. Cuba has managed to do a lot with very little, especially with regards to education and health care. Their systems are on-par with those in developed, capitalist countries while their per capita income places them among the most impoverished countries on earth.
