How has no one mentioned William Gibson or "Neuromancer" yet?
> The matrix is an abstract representation of the relationship between data systems. Legitimate programmers jack into their employers' sector of the matrix and find themselves surrounded by bright geometries representing the corporate data.
> Towers and fields of it ranged in the colorless nonspace of the the simulation matrix, the electronic consensus-hallucination that facilitates the handling and exchange of massive quantities of data.
- ctdonath 12y agoIt's a 30-year-old book ... older than many people who are making viable VR a thing now. Neuromancer sparked the otherwise naive notion of what VR would be like, but now we've developed and normalized a good chunk of the technology & language (verbal & visual), in a society which has grown accustomed to pervasive computer interfaces (I sit here with 8 on my desk alone, and totaling 22 in this room). Reality has taken a somewhat different & concrete direction from what Gibson fluidly predicted. The wonder of a hypothetical world of people jacking into their sector of the matrix surrounded by bright geometries has been replaced by the mundanity of a real world of people staring at Facebook et al; we live the electronic consensus-hallucination of massive data, and are not impressed by someone telling us in abstract terms how wonderful it will be.
