What Erdos worked on will outlast us all. Your great grandkids will be studying his theorems. OTOH, getting an iPhone to last beyond the annual upgrade cycle is a monumental achievement.

- general_failure 12y agoSo, it's all justified if your work outlasts you? Such work is impossible to know in advance when you are working on it.
- seanflyon 12y agoImpossible to know, quite possible to have a reasonable guess.
- vlunkr 12y agoYes but you're comparing the wrong things. A single iPhone may not last long, but the impact of the iPhone has been tremendous.
- dilap 12y agoErdos is an extreme case! But for some people, given their talents, being part of making the iPhone might be a significant enough accomplishment to devote some serious time to.
