The money/resources necessary to put one million people on Mars with a self-sustainable industrial base would be better spent trying to stave off disaster on our home world. It's easier, cheaper and faster to detect and deflect asteroids than building that colony... Not that building colonies in space wouldn't be a good idea for other reasons.
