Really i/o bandwith probably isn't the issue here, latency will be an issue for communications between mars and earth but as far as getting to the colony and sustaining it will be a lot of hard math problems and impressive calculations. Oh and node can easily do millions of connections and lighttpd beat the 10k problem a long time ago.
