If anything the problem may be increased today. E.g. IBM in 1960 had around 100k employees, and today has around 430k. The distance between a "line" employee and executive team has to have increased with that scale up of employee count. Communications technology has helped somewhat, but I wonder if large companies might be paying a scaling toll.
