In my experience it doesn't matter as long as you have enough experience. Or in other words, any difference in behaviour/knowledge fades away after a few years of working on serious projects. After 5 years your initial formation might not matter anymore if you kept on learning new things regularly. For the image aspect, I often worked with self-taughed people who lacked generic knowledge like design patterns, but where openly enthouthiastic about learning anything new. Overall it's a wash.
