Ultimately, as in all professions, you want to be supported by your manager. Building that trust is what earns you promotions, helps proliferate your work, and contributes to your career goals. So I completely agree with your comment, and would go further to say that if the OP makes it a point of stating they are self-taught, they will self select. They may have to churn through more interviews to make up for the bias, but in the long run it will be more worthwhile.
