One thing of interest when we compare driving in NYC to elsewhere: in NYC you are not allowed to turn right on a red light. Same goes for Montreal. This definitely changes the car-pedestrian dynamic, but I have no idea how it might factor into safety issues etc. I suspect it's only a small part of the big picture why driving in NYC is categorically different than suburbs.
